Words from the Principal’s Office – Mr. Chung
Dear Terrific Hoover Community,
I’d like to thank you for your interest in Hoover Math & Science Academy, otherwise known as (HMSA). Our school provides an exceptional education to five hundred and twenty five kindergarten through sixth grade students on a daily basis. Our school’s philosophy incorporates individual learning, best practices within instruction, and creating a community based feel. Hoover Math and Science Academy offers a unique learning environment for our students in the areas of mathematics and science. With a greenhouse, community garden, two science labs, and a computer lab, Hoover Academy is designed to give students the opportunity to explore science/math topics in an inquiry-based learning model. The school’s greatest assets lie within our students, the staff, the support of the parents, and the local community. Our staff is committed to excellence on a daily basis.
We always welcome parents and community members who find time to volunteer at HMSA in order to be a part of a child’s education. We also encourage parents to join our very active and involved Parent Teacher Association. Our school seeks to create an environment that encourages high levels of student achievement on a daily basis and our dedicated staff provides learning opportunities to meet the needs of every student. You will find that our students consistently exceed state averages on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT). We were awarded the ‘Academic Excellence Award’ by the Illinois State Board of Education this past school year. We have also achieved the 90/90 meets/exceeds benchmark on the ISAT assessments for the past five years.
I began my educational journey in Houston, Texas as a fifth grade teacher, and continued on as a sixth grade teacher in Community Consolidated School District 15, which is located in Palatine, Illinois. While working in Palatine, I completed my graduate degree in Educational Leadership, and served as a building administrator for four years. Prior to arriving at HMSA, I served as the building principal at Lincoln Prairie School for four years. In 1998, I was the recipient of the Sallie Mae First Class Teaching Award for the state of Illinois and was awarded the Larry Stilgebauer Award for exemplary technology use within the classroom in 2000. I am currently in my second year as a doctoral student at the University of Illinois. I currently live in the Northwest Suburbs with my wife, have two terrific sons, and have a rather interesting dog. I am a huge Iowa Hawkeye supporter and I represent the college of education as a board of director for the University of Iowa Alumni Association. My family also cheers on the White Sox!
We have an incredible school and I am so proud to be the building principal. Our students, parents, community volunteers, and staff are simply outstanding. Please feel free to contact me at 847 357-5800 or e-mail me at jakechung@sd54.org if you have any further questions. Have a wonderful day!
Sincerely,
Jake Chung
