A Message from Mrs. Rosenblum

Dear HMSA Families,

Day 3 is already off to a stellar start! Our PBIS Ambassadors did a fabulous job cheering students on as they entered the gym for our first assembly. (Photo above.) We shared a great book with students called You’re Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman. It is a sweet story about how we all matter and make a difference in the world.  Hopefully they can tell you about it tonight.

Our first two days have been incredible!  Students have done an amazing job to start the year. Be sure to check out our photos on Facebook or Instagram. Here are the links:

When I asked students over the summer what they liked best about HMSA, the number one answer was “the other kids. They are so nice.” I can see why that is the number one answer. The students here are so friendly and caring. They warmly greeted their old friends and have generously reached out to make new ones. Seeing them interact at recess and in the classroom has been wonderful!

In addition, they are showing us how invested they are in their learning. They are already setting goals for themselves for the year. As Mrs. Ankrom and I shared with all students, we want this to be their best year yet! We are here to support and cheer them on. Your partnership is important to us. As we work together this school year, please feel free to reach out to any one of us here at the Hoover Math and Science Academy if you have questions or concerns.

54 Promise
The 54 Promise is a multi-year strategic plan to guide District 54’s core work of ensuring whole-child student success.  Through the efforts of the Strategic Planning Committee, consisting of teachers, administrators, parents and community members, this document was created to provide clarity around the key district goals and operating priorities that will drive our system ahead in the years to come. Our staff members have used this document to write their own promises for the year. They have posted them in their classrooms. Be sure to look for them when you come to curriculum night.

Thanks for your patience with our dismissal the first few days of school.  It tends to take a few minutes longer the first week or so as we settle into new routines.  If your child rides the bus, we aim to have them on the bus and rolling out of the lot at 3:10 each day.  Again, this may be delayed a bit the first week or so as we learn the routines.  Thanks for your patience as we all learn the ropes.  If you have any questions, please reach out to the main office.

Wednesday Dismissal
As a reminder, all students will be dismissed at 2:30PM every Wednesday.

Chromebook forms for 5th and 6th Grade Families
We look forward to utilizing the Chromebooks to enhance your child’s learning experiences at HMSA.   Chromebook information will be shared in the library on August 29th. The Parent/Guardian Acceptable Use Agreement form can be found below. Please sign the form and return it to school.

District 54 offers 5th and 6th grade families an optional protection plan to insure the district-owned Chromebooks issued to students.  This insurance program protects the Chromebook against loss, theft, or destruction as a result of accidental damage.  The insurance policy will provide replacement cost coverage and protect the Chromebook on and off school grounds for one school year.  If interested, please send a check for $25 (made out to School District 54) to the Hoover office.  See the attached flyer for more information.

All forms will be explained in detail at Curriculum Night. Completed forms can be returned to the main office or to the classroom teacher.

Hoover Happening & Curriculum Night
We are combining these two wonderful events! It will take place on Wednesday, August 29. The schedule for Curriculum Night/Hoover Happening looks like this:

  • 5:30-7:30 – Hoover Happening occurs the entire time, outside on the playground with families
  • 4:45-5:15 – Chromebook Informational Session#1 in the library for parents of 5th and 6th graders
  • 5:30-6:00 – Curriculum session #1 in classrooms
  • 6:00-6:30 – Transition time to answer individual questions or time to visit with families
  • 6:30-7:00 – Curriculum session #2 in classrooms
  • 7:05-7:35 Chromebook Informational Session #2 in the library for parents of 5th and 6th graders

Curriculum session #2 will be a repeat of session #1 so that families that have more than one child have an opportunity to go to two classrooms. The Chromebook session #2 will also be a repeat of session #1 so families can choose the time that best fits their schedule. Parents and students are welcome to attend all sessions.

MAP Testing
Fall MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) will begin next week and continue through September 7. Each student at the Hoover Math and Science Academy will take one MAP reading session and one MAP math session.  This data will be used to better know your child as a learner, as well as inform our teachers on how to best instruct your child.

Please let us know if you need anything.
