Principal’s Message

Dear HMSA Families,

Thank you to everyone for participating in our first all school Padlet. It is one more way for us to connect with our students. We loved seeing their favorite animals. A few are featured above. This week we have two Padlets. Our school one will focus on the Happiness Tactics. Students will be sent a link on Tuesday to participate. Our PTA has also put together a Padlet for staff appreciation week. Please log on with your child to participate https://padlet.com/melissadepau/g7mcazmjzffjo24x.

Here are the other plans our PTA has put together to honor our staff this week. Your kind words and gratitude mean the world to our staff – always, but especially in light of our current circumstances. They have gone above and beyond to support students during V Learning. They’ve really stepped up and learned a lot as they adapted to teaching in a new way. I feel fortunate to work with people that are Champions for Students. Thank you for your participation.

Field Day is a favorite day each year for staff students and families. We are very grateful to Mrs. Leam, Mrs. Lenski and our PE department for putting together a virtual field day. This Wednesday, May 6 is Field Day. We hope your family will have a great time participating. No other school work will be assigned that day. Here are a few more details:

District 54 Physical Educators are excited to invite you to the first ever V-Field Day on Wednesday May 6th. V-Field Day will allow you to complete Field Day experiences in your own living room or backyard. Click here to access all of the V-Field Day events. All stations can be simply created using household items and a little ingenuity. We have also teamed up with the District 54 Grizzlies, our Special Olympics team, to add adaptations for students who need them so we are sure everyone can participate!  Each school community will also be able to engage virtually through their own Field Day Padlet!

District 54 Summer Camps Cancelled
Due to this unprecedented time we are faced with, all District 54 Summer Camps have been cancelled for this year. These camps include Summer STEM, 54 Fitness League, Camp Creative, Language and Culture Camp, and Summer Instrumental Music. If you have su

bmitted a payment for any camp, you will be issued a refund starting Thursday, April 30, and you should see a credit appear on your statement within 14 business days.

The camp facilitators are going to miss seeing students this summer. Students in all grade levels can stay engaged by participating in the School District 54 Summer Virtual Learning University, which is filled with fun activities and challenges for students and families to participate in together from home. The link for the Virtual Learning University will be on the School District 54 website in the last week of May.

Last Day of School
The last day of School/V-Learning is Thursday, May 28th.

District 54 will continue to interact with students through the D54 V-Learning Website.  The website also contains a parent guide, a student guide and frequently asked questions.

Families who do not have Internet access at home or are experiencing problems with students’ devices can email VLearning@nullsd54.org. Spanish-speaking families who need assistance can contact BarbaraVelez@nullsd54.org or call 847-357-5074.

Student Grades
The Illinois State Board of Education has said that student work completed during the statewide closure should not count negatively toward student grades or a student’s academic standing. However, District 54 will continue to design high quality lessons and activities for students; to assess student progress; and to provide feedback on student work.

Special Accommodations Website
The District 54 Special Education Department has created a website with resources for the families of students who regularly receive accommodations at school. Click here to access the website, and find information about speech supports, behavior management, assistive technology, health and mental wellness, physical and occupational therapy, contact information and much more.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Laura Rosenblum and Mrs. Stephanie Fry
