Hello Hoover Community,
On behalf of the HMSA staff we wish all of our families a Happy New Year! We were all so excited to see our students back on Zoom this week after our winter break. We certainly missed everyone and we look forward to jumping into 2021!
Return to Hybrid In-Person Learning
On Tuesday, January 19th, students who had previously been enrolled in “hybrid in-person learning” will return to Hoover Math and Science Academy. Students will follow the same schedule they were prior to the adaptive pause.
Group A – Monday/Thursday
Group B – Tuesday/Friday
*All students are remote on Wednesdays
More information will be sent to our hybrid families with reminders about the self-screener, mask requirements, and other back-to-school notifications. District 54 has developed mitigation strategies in alignment with the guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois State Board of Education, and Cook County Department of Public Health. District 54 will continue to evaluate the public health data and best practices, with the safety and wellbeing of our students and staff as our top priority.
We ask that you continue to inform our office if your student and/or member of your household is testing for COVID or has tested positive for COVID. Thank you to everyone who is doing their part to support our students, staff, and families during this pandemic. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Upcoming Kindergarten Registration
District 54 will hold kindergarten registration for the 2021-22 school year by appointment only starting Wednesday, February 3, 2021.
Families must begin the process by completing an online registration (starting January 25th) prior to securing an appointment. If you have a student currently enrolled in District 54, you can register your incoming kindergartener through your Parent Portal account. Families new to District 54 can register through the link on our website (http://sd54.org/registration).
Once your online registration is complete, you will be contacted to schedule your in person appointment to complete your student’s registration.

New D54 Wellness Website
The year 2020 has been a difficult time for so many people. Throughout this year one thing that hasn’t changed is District 54’s commitment to the well-being of our community. This week we are launching a new online District 54 Wellness Space. This website includes videos, resources and links to valuable activities for students, for families and for staff. For example, the student pages include energizing videos and calming videos, read-alouds of books about feelings, and links to help children manage their emotions. The pages for adults include mental health webinars, COVID-related resources and links to support provided by District 54. We hope you will take the time to explore this self-care website and engage with the resources that best support your needs.
The School District 54 Food Pantry at Keller
The D54 Food Pantry at Keller is open and ready to serve our District 54 families. Although you will not be able to come into the pantry due to COVID restrictions, you will be able to place an order online and pick up at the pantry site. Your child’s daily attendance in virtual learning is vital to their continued academic success. Students who are absent miss a great deal of instruction. Regular, daily attendance is a key factor for school success and is required by law. Unnecessary absence from school may have a negative effect on a student’s attitude, work habits, and academic progress. Our priority is to work with our families to support their child’s consistent attendance in school. If families are struggling with supporting their child with attendance and work completion, please reach out to your child’s teacher, or contact us at 847-357-5800 for assistance. We understand that some students are struggling at this time, and we want to work as a team to ensure your child’s success.
If your child is not able to attend classes, please continue to call the attendance line by 8:00 a.m. each day your child will be absent. Please make every effort to schedule vacations and medical appointments around the school calendar. Any student absences not reported will be marked as unexcused. The Parent Portal is available for attendance and tardies.

Text Messages for School Information
Occasionally, we will use text messaging to share important information with our families. If you would like to receive a text message from District 54, you can sign up by texting the word YES to the number 68453. You can opt out at any time by texting STOP to the same number. Make sure you are texting from a phone number that we have on file in District 54.
