For the month of December, our Happiness committee is focusing on the Happiness Tactic of MEDITATION. Below are some ways that you and your family can practice meditation outside of school!
Five-Senses Game:
Take turns talking about what you notice with each of your senses, sight, sound, taste, and touch. This can be done on a walk, during a car ride, before bed, or in any spare moment of wait time.

Breathing Buddies:
Have your child lie down with a stuffed animal resting on their belly. Encourage them to take deep breaths while noticing how their breathing buddy moves up and down with each breath.

Candle Breathing:
Encourage your child to imagine a candle in front of them and instruct them to take a slow, deep breath in through their nose. As they breathe out through their mouth, have them gently “blow” the imaginary flame to make it flicker but not go out. Your child could also place a finger in front of their month to act as the candle and feel the air.

Candle Gazing:
Place a real or battery-operated candle where the child can see it comfortably and dim the lights if possible for better focus. Have the child gaze on the flame and ask them to count how many times the flame flickers, suggesting they count each time it moves in a specific way. Encourage them to watch the colors of the flame, like yellow, orange and green. After a short time, have them close their eyes and see if they can visualize the flame in their mind.
